“Only Perez drove the full package”: Marko reveals Verstappen did not have upgrade in Portimao

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen managed to score a P2 during the race in Portugal on Sunday. Overall, the Dutchman made several errors which allowed Lewis Hamilton to overpower him and get his 97th Grand Prix victory.

Helmut Marko has disclosed that Verstappen’s car did not have all the technology and upgrades which are required to dominate the race. On the other hand, his teammate Sergio Perez drove a fully kitted-out car.

“Only Perez drove the full package, Max did without the wing,” Marko said.

“We can’t do that to Max, now that he has a car for the first time with which he can become world champion. We will see further depending on the World Cup standing.”

Marko had mentioned last month that Red Bull will be developing its car this year to compete with rivals Mercedes for a chance at the world title.

Currently, Red Bull is just 18 points behind Mercedes in the constructors’ title race. Verstappen, on the other hand, is 8 points behind Hamilton.

If Red Bull dominates the next race, this difference in points can be easily deleted. However, if Mercedes is to win, it may appear to be an uphill struggle for the Austrian outfit.

The Formula 1 entourage will now be heading to Barcelona where Hamilton had won the Spanish Grand Prix last year.

If Verstappen manages to score a win, things will equal out between him and Hamilton before the Monaco Grand Prix which will take place later this month.
