Riyad Karim Mahrez is an Algerian footballer who captains the Algerian national team and plays as a winger for Premier League club Manchester City. He was born on 21st February 1991, in Sarcelles, France.
Mahrez began his career as a youth player with AAS Sarcelles in France. He began his professional career in 2009 with Quimper, where he spent only one season before moving to Le Havre. here, he plied his trade for three years, initially as a reserve player and subsequently as a first-team regular.
Mahrez joined Leicester City in January 2014, and during his debut season, he helped them win the Championship and gain promotion to the Premier League.
He was named Algerian Footballer of the Year, PFA Players’ Player of the Year, and a member of the Premier League PFA Team of the Year in the 2015–16 season, after he helped Leicester City win the Premier League. He joined Manchester City in 2018, and in his first season, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup.
Mahrez, who was born in France, made his international debut for Algeria in 2014, playing in the 2014 FIFA World Cup as well as 2015, 2017 and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, winning the latter in 2019. He was selected African Footballer of the Year by the CAF in 2016.
Transfer mayhem
Mahrez confirmed his intention to quit Leicester City at the end of the 2016–17 season. Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger expressed interest in signing Mahrez after the announcement, and Roma had a proposal for Mahrez rejected in July 2017. Despite his unclear future at the club, he spoke of his “concentration” in August 2017.
On August 31, the last day of the transfer market, the Algerian Football Federation announced that he had been authorized to leave the national team and go to Europe in order to complete a transfer to an interested club; nevertheless, the transfer did not go through.
In January 2018, he requested a transfer away from the club once more. Mahrez quit training at Leicester after a move to Manchester City fell through. Chris Sutton, a former player and commentator, chastised him for his actions. Mahrez blamed his colleagues for making “untrue assumptions” regarding his absence from the club but later praised them for their support.
Eventually, he made a move to Manchester City.
