Sergio Perez lashed out at Nikita Mazepin during the Dutch GP.
The feud between Perez and Mazepin began at the beginning of the season, and wrote its latest chapter at Zandvoort. There, Mazepin was once again in Perez’s way, prompting Checo to react angrily. The Mexican was furious with the Russian rookie, and let it be known on team radio
The two drivers were driving around the track during the race. The much-faster Perez, who found himself starting the race from the pitlane, had Mazepin in front of him. He tried everything to overtake the Haas driver, but he was blocking him needlessly. Perez eventually found a gap and overtook, and then lashed out at Mazepin.
“This guy is a joke!” Perez said on team radio, not mincing words and fully frustrated.
Perez’s rage was understandable, given how much drivers have to try to fight and gain positions. This is doubly true on a tough track like Zandvoort, where overtaking opportunities are at a premium. Mazepin’s blocking moves ended up making Checo angry, and he let him have it on team radio.
Mazepin did little to change Perez’s perception of him, given their feud from earlier on in the season. It was a weekend to forget for Mazepin, but also one for Perez and Red Bull.
Perez was shockingly knocked out in Q1 itself on Saturday. His race day then went from bad to worse as his team accepted a power unit change and a subsequent penalty. Even though he clawed twelve places back to finish P8, it was not enough for Red Bull to take the lead in the Constructors’ Championship. Rivals Mercedes had their drivers finish P2 and P3, so the points added up in their favour again.
