Some of international soccer’s biggest shocks

International tournaments bring people together from all over the world. They are also known for great examples of underdogs triumphing against the odds. Let’s explore some of the best examples of this after asking whether there will be an upset at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar?

Could we see a shock winner at the 2022 World Cup?

Following the draw for the group stage of the World Cup, fans from across the world are starting to get excited. Teams like Canada are going with little expectation so anything they achieve will be a bonus. Perhaps loyal Canadians will take a punt on them progressing to the knockout stage? As the competition gets closer, many bookmakers will start offering different specials outside of the outright winner market.

You might even choose to place a risk free bet from Draftkings and go for Canada to qualify from a group containing two sides who reached the semi-finals in 2018. As we have said already, there have been some great examples of countries performing against all expectations.

Denmark win Euro ’92

Despite having a few great players, Denmark went into Euro ’92 as outsiders, but they proved all the experts wrong. They beat World champions Germany 2-0 in the final in of the sport’s greatest ever shocks. It also provided one of the sport’s greatest quotes. One of the Danish players reportedly said: “We couldn’t fail because there were no expectations.”

Greece triumphs at Euro 2004

2004 was an incredible year for shocks in European soccer. First of all, Porto won the Champions League. Then Greece triumphed to win Euro 2004 as covered by The Guardian. Before the tournament, very few people expected them to get out of the group but expectations started to rise after they beat hosts Portugal in the opening match. This was something they repeated in the final.

North Korea beats Italy at the 1966 World Cup

Of course, the 1966 World Cup is more famously known for England winning their only title. However, there were some other iconic moments throughout the tournament. Most notably, North Korea beat Italy. It was a huge moment for sport in the country, and they went on to reach the quarter-finals. The game was played in Middlesbrough, and many locals who were in attendance still talk about it now as discussed on Koryo Group.

Peru beats Argentina at Copa America 1997

The Copa America has often seen some great moments for Argentina, but there have also been some nightmare moments. Most notably, this defeat against Peru in 1997. Before the match, many anticipated a straightforward victory for Argentina that would have meant them facing Brazil in the semi-final. However, Peru shocked the world. More annoyingly for the Argentinians, Brazil thrashed Peru 7-0 in the next stage.

Senegal defeats France at the 2002 World Cup

The 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan had several shock results throughout the competition. This defeat for France was one of the biggest. France were the reigning champions, and many thought they’d retain the trophy. However, they started with a 1-0 defeat against Senegal. Things didn’t get much better, and they went out at the group stage.

Like many so-called ‘smaller’ nations, Senegal will be looking to cause another shock in Qatar. Could this come against the Netherlands? As we have seen, anything is possible in these international tournaments.
