Former world number one Boris Becker believes Alexander Zverev should be focused on finishing the year strong and positioning himself to become world No. 1 early next year.
Zverev, who is rated No. 4 in the world, reached a career-high rating of No. 1 for the first time.
In 2017, it was ranked number three in the world. Zverev broke into the top three early on, but he hasn’t been able to make the next step since.
He won the 500th ATP tournament in Vienna on Sunday, defeating Frances Tiafoe. Zverev will now compete in the Nitto ATP Finals and the Paris Masters.
“He really has become a world class player. His goal should be to earn as many points as possible in the indoor season,
“So he can put himself in the best position to become No. 1 next year and maybe already with a victory in Melbourne,” Becker told Eure, as revealed on We Love Tennis.
Zverev won his fifth championship of the season
Alexander Zverev won his fifth title in 2021 by defeating Tiafoe 7-5 6-4. In Vienna, Tiafoe caused a few upsets, but Zverev didn’t let him do it again, winning his first title of the season.
“He didn’t let me play the way I wanted to play, tactically he was very good,” Zverev said.
“But I am happy with the win and I am happy with my fifth title of the year and I am happy with my first in Vienna, so it was a good day.”
Since winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Zverev has been on a roll.
“I think the Olympics gave me a lot of confidence and I believe I can compete for any title that I play in,” Zverev added.
“I am happy with the form I am in but I have got two more massive weeks ahead of me and I hope I can do well”.
