Credible journalist Carole Bouchard explained Novak Djokovic’s target, saying that he was looking to surpass Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal only.
Djokovic, Federer and Nadal are part of the Big Three of tennis. Three elite competitors who have battled each other many times, they represent the best of their era. With all three men tied on 20 Grand Slams each, there is a convincing argument to be made for each of them being the best.
In recent times, however, the latter two have slowed down while the Serbian continued to push on. It has gotten to the point where Federer and Nadal both had an injury-riddled 2021, while the current World No. 1 won his 20th Grand Slam.
Bouchard explained Djokovic’s target for 2022, saying that he wanted to leapfrog his rivals once and for all.
In a recent interview with the Tennis Majors portal as quoted by Tennis World USA, the journalist said, “The rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev has certainly grown in the last year, but it will never be like Borg-McEnroe or Federer-Nadal.
“First of all, it must be remembered that between Djokovic and Medvedev there are about 10 years of difference.
“In addition, Medvedev has shown that he can compete with Djokovic for a single season and only on hard courts. The Russian has to improve a lot on grass and clay to reach Nole’s level.
“Djokovic’s obsession is to win his 21st Grand Slam in order to overtake Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. His purpose is not to beat Medvedev or Zverev.”
Tailing off
Justine Henin also commented on Djokovic’s prospects for 2022, and said that although she expects him to win more majors, he wouldn’t have a year as good as his 2021.
“I think Novak will have a chance to win more majors in the next few years,” he said.
“At the same time, I think he will be less dominant than in 2021.”
