World No. 1 Novak Djokovic’s former coach backed him on his visa issue, saying that he was not in the wrong regarding what is happening in Australia.

Djokovic’s ongoing tussle with the Australian government has been making all the headlines. His anti-vax status, his flouting of the COVID-19 regulations and his legal battle with those involved have all fuelled the fire before the Australian Open.

Many fans and tennis personalities have slammed the Serbian for his actions, stating that he was putting himself and those around him at risk. However, there have been a few supporters in his corner, including a past associate of his in Lars Kis.

Djokovic’s former coach backed him on his visa issue, saying that everything that happened was far from the 20-time Grand Slam winner’s fault.

“We’re right in the middle of this pandemic and everyone has their views on it, but it is still a free choice,” Kis told Today.

“I don’t think he’s made others look like a fool. He’s made his choice and it is current – we don’t know whether he will get vaccinated when he returns to Serbia or Spain – so it really is an ongoing situation, isn’t it?”

He ain’t the Djoke

“Nick Kyrgios is allowed to play the Australian Open. If it was just a few weeks back, he wouldn’t be – the rules are changing daily,” he explained.

“To me, it’s pretty clear what happened. Novak did a few things wrong in Serbia – he did some things wrong in Spain. Those countries will deal with that legally, I’m sure.

“When it comes to him coming here, he hasn’t done anything wrong. He wanted to play tennis because he’s a tennis player and he wanted to play the tournament.

“Our officials, Tennis Australia, the organisers for the tournament, they allowed him – they gave him the permission and now we’re in this trouble where it’s kind of turned quite political,” he concluded.
