F1 cherished a passionate fangirl of the sport in the build-up to the Italian Grand Prix, who was on the verge of winning her first Grand Slam victory at the US Open. She’s managed to pull it off! Emma Raducanu defeated 73rd-seeded Leylah Fernandez to win her first US Open.
The 18-year-old showed great tenacity in defeating the eventual runner-up, winning two sets in a row, 6-4 and 6-3. In the aftermath of her victory, congratulations messages from the whole F1 community have poured in.
This is because Raducanu is the first British woman to win the Grand Slam in 44 years.
Raducanu’s victory celebrated by F1 on Twitter
This comes as no surprise, given her status as a British superstar since revealing her passion for Formula 1. She recently took part in the current Pirelli hot lap at Silverstone, where she explained that, despite having chosen tennis as her career path, she still enjoys watching motorsport.
She also stated that when she was younger, she used to compete in karting and motocross before deciding to pursue a career in tennis.
Drivers and teams have chosen to commemorate Raducanu’s Grand Slam victory as their own. Several teams and drivers, including McLaren and George Russell, congratulated the 18-year-old on her flawless performance.
What makes her day even more special is that Daniel Ricciardo, her favourite Formula One driver, will start the upcoming Italian Grand Prix from the front row with Max Verstappen.
This will be the Australian’s first start from the first row since winning the Mexican Grand Prix in 2018. Can a little bit of Raducanu fever rub off on Ricciardo?
