Team Europe won the first day of the Laver Cup, winning three of the four matches they played against Team World. Despite losing all of their singles matches on the day, team Red’s John Isner and Denis Shapovalov won their first match against Team Blue, which featured Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini in their first doubles match of the season.
The first set was easily won by Team Europe, 6-4. Berrettini and Zverev didn’t let Isner and Shapovalov take control of the rallies, and they dictated the majority of them. Both teams gave it they’re all in the second set, which was hotly contested.
What did Alexander Zverev say after the match?
In the tie-breaker, however, Team World triumphed over Matteo Berrettini and Alexander Zverev. After each team took a set, the match was decided by a ten-point match tie-breaker.
Team Europe squandered this tie-breaker, as John Isner and Denis Shapovalov proved to be no match for them. Team World eventually won the tiebreaker 10-1, claiming their first victory of the day.
After the match, Team World players exchanged a few words about what Alexander Zverev had said following his defeat.

Isner: “He said that? Fuck him…”
Schwartzman: “What did he say?”
McEnroe: “He said that’s the last point we’re gonna win.”
Opelka: “He also said he’s innocent.”
McEnroe: “Yeah, good point.”

Following the defeat, the German stated that this would be Team World’s final point of the season. In response, John Isner vowed to get vengeance on him, reportedly saying, “I want to make this personal.”

While the debate was going on, John Isner tweeted that he didn’t say anything throughout the meeting.
“That’s not what I said but go on”, the American countered.

At the end of day one, things grew hot between the two squads, as Team World players were all anxious to give it their all the next day.
On the second day, though, things did not appear to be going as planned. In the first match of the day, Nick Kyrgios was defeated in straight sets by Stefanos Tsitsipas. But against Alexander Zverev in the second singles match of the day, Isner has an opportunity to put on a show.
