Due to a wrist injury, Czech tennis star Karolina Pliskova has been forced to withdraw from the Ostrava Open. Pliskova, 29, competed in last year’s Ostrava event.
Pliskova suffered a shock loss to Veronika Kudermetova in her tournament debut at the time.
Pliskova was expecting to make it all the way to the final in front of their home supporters, but her hopes were dashed. Pliskova was anticipated to compete again this year, however she was unable to do to injuries. Pliskova would have been the overwhelming favorite in Ostrava.
Pliskova’s last game was at the US Open
Pliskova had a strong showing at the US Open, where she reached the quarterfinals. Pliskova was defeated 6-4 6-4 by Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals.
She said, “I thought she played very good match, very solid. Of course, I didn’t get many chances on her serve which was a bit frustrating because I didn’t have many matches like this, My serve was so-and-so today. But just one break in each set.
“I thought maybe if I could have held the serve a bit longer, maybe I could have more chances than I had. No, I mean, of course disappointed, but it’s not like it would be really in my hands, this match.”
Pliskova said after the match that she was taken aback by Sakkari’s aggressiveness.
“I didn’t have any chances on her serve. I don’t think I played the best tennis today,” she added, according to reports on Tennis World.
“I don’t think I was serving the way I was serving the last couple matches which you have to serve against opponents like this because she doesn’t give you much for free.
“I was actually not surprised because I know she’s playing well, and we had one practice before this tournament. But I was quite surprised she was really going for her shots. I know she can be also, like, maybe passive at some times. She was not really.”
