After losing in straight sets against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first match of day two at the Laver Cup, Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios made a few bold remarks about the rest of his season and his future at the tournament.
Kyrgios has been very selective in choosing events to play in since the beginning of the year, and he has made it obvious that he is just playing to amuse the fans who pay to watch him play.
At this year’s Australian Open, the Australian was a part of a few of entertaining encounters that included Ugo Humbert and Dominic Thiem.
Even his two matches at Wimbledon were excellent before he retired midway through the third round against Felix Auger-Aliassime. Since SW19, the Australian has competed in events in Washington and Montreal before going to New York for the final slam.
Unfortunately for Nick, he was eliminated in the first round of both competitions by players such as Mackenzie McDonald, Reilly Opelka, and Roberto Bautista Agut. Kyrgios is also unlikely to compete in the remaining tournaments for the rest of the year.
Kyrgios confirms Laver Cup will be his final tournament in 2021
Following his loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas, Kyrgios stated that the Laver Cup will undoubtedly be his final tournament of the year.
“Definitely this is my last event of the year. You know, I need to go back home. I have been traveling for four-and-a-half months now. My mum is not doing too well with her health. I’d like to go back and see her”, Kyrgios told, according to reports on Reuters.
The Australian also talked about his plans for next year’s Happy Slam. With players already preparing for the quarantine in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open, Kyrgios stated that he will begin his preseason practice and be prepared to compete in front of his home audience.
“Obviously the conditions in Australia aren’t ideal at the moment, but I don’t want to be on the road playing tennis when I want to spend time with my family. Obviously, you know, I’ll get my body right and I’ll start my preseason, spend time with my family for the Australian Open and go from there”, he further added.
When asked about his future in the Laver Cup, Nick Kyrgios made another surprise admission.
He said, “I’m playing Laver Cup again, and I’m not going to lie, I think this is my last year I will probably play Laver Cup. There is an amazing amount of talent around the world and amazing personalities. You look at the rookies on the team, Opelka and Felix, who are incredible, incredible players.”
It would be difficult for players to see Kyrgios withdraw from the tournament. Although, there are many players who can step in and play fantastic tennis.
Despite losing both of their first matches this year, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Reilly Opelka, have proven their worth.
