Tennis coach Rick Macci made a big Serena Williams claim, saying that she is the absolute G.O.A.T of women’s tennis.
Macci was one of Serena’s first coaches, and has loads of experience coaching top players. In his career, he has trained five former World No. 1s, including the American superstar.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner is one of the elites of women’s tennis, but finds herself going through a lean patch at the moment. However, her coach is still very much Team SW, and defended her place in history.
Macci made a big Serena Williams claim, saying that no player can touch her legacy at the moment.
“To me it’s easy with (the women), you already know what I’m going to say,” he said, as quoted by Tennis World USA.
“I think if you just judge it on the accomplishments and with your eyes, I don’t think anybody is even close to Serena. I just don’t even think it’s close. Nothing against anybody else, but she’s incredible.
“(It’s) nothing to do with me. She’s just incredible in every way. To me that’s a slam dunk.”
Frances Tiafoe also hailed the impact Serena and her sister Venus Williams has had on tennis and diversity in the sport.
“The name of the Williams is so important, even more so in the African-American community,” he said.
“Without what they have achieved, I would never have entered the world of tennis. Earlier, apart from them, there were no other coloured players. What they have also succeeded in bringing, in their wake, are the Sloane Stephens, the Coco Gauffs.
“She’s (Serena’s) a G.O.A.T and for decades! She is so much more than what she has accomplished in tennis.
“I grew up in a neighbourhood where everyone around, in every corner, knows Serena Williams. When I go back and say I play tennis, the first thing I hear is, ‘Ah! Like the Williams sisters!’”
