Murray discusses key ‘decision-making’ ability that separates Novak Djokovic from the rest

Despite failing at the US Open, Novak Djokovic’s 2021 is certain to go down in history as a memorable year.

The world number one reached the final in New York after winning the first three Slams of the season but was stopped by tension and weariness.

The 34-year-old Belgrade native plainly surrendered to Daniil Medvedev’s punches at Arthur Ashe Stadium, only one step from the finish line.

Nole would become only the second man in the Open Era, after Rod Laver, to win all four majors in the same year if he wins in New York.

Due to the untimely exit of Medvedev in the Indian Wells Masters 1000, the 20-time Grand Slam winner is practically guaranteed to conclude 2021 at the top of the ATP rankings.

Djokovic’s ability to make the right judgment is one of the reasons he succeeds in the most challenging situations.

Andy Murray was asked to select the player with the best ‘decision-making abilities’.

Murray talks about Djokovic

“I’d probably say Novak Djokovic in important situations for the most part,” Andy Murray said as per reports on PostXNews.

“I would say he probably would have made the right decision more often than not, more than most players. I would say right now Medvedev is right up there. A very smart player and stuff.”

Murray feels that a player’s decision-making is heavily influenced by his or her level of confidence at the time.

He pointed out that indecisiveness might hurt a player who lacks confidence.

“I think a lot of that comes with confidence and also how you’re feeling about your game and your shots,” Murray added.

“I think if you’re not quite feeling your shots that well, are not sure how the ball’s going to come out of your racquet sometimes, that’s when there’s a little bit of indecision,

“That split-second decision, you sort of maybe change your mind or whatever, and that’s when the mistakes can come.”

The Serbian’s decision to skip Indian Wells sparked speculation that he will not play again this year. Instead of opting to defend his Australian Open title in 2022.

However, Sportklub writer Sasa Ozmo has confirmed that the 20-time Grand Slam winner will finish the season.

Djokovic may therefore compete in the Paris Masters before going to Turin for the year-end championships.
