Andy Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, said he didn’t play well enough at the Indian Wells Masters to overcome world No. 4 Alexander Zverev.
Murray, who was given a wild card into Indian Wells, was knocked out in the third round by Zverev, who went on to win the tournament.
“I don’t think I played well today,” said Murray as per reports on TennisHead.
“There’s lots of mistakes. There’s some good stuff in there but it was mixed in with bad. There was no sort of consistency I don’t think.
“My average level was just not really there today. It was either good or bad. I wouldn’t put that down as playing really well.”
Murray’s lack of consistency
Andy Murray got off to a strong start in the match, taking a 3-0 lead early on.
Murray lost back-to-back breaks as Zverev overcame the deficit to take a 5-3 lead after winning the first three games of the match.
He broke Zverev’s five-game winning streak in the ninth game, but the German served out in the next game.
Andy Murray got off to a good start in the second set, taking a 3-1 lead. Murray’s lead was short-lived, however, as Zverev broke back in the fifth game and then again in the 11th to take a 6-5 lead.
In the 12th game, Zverev missed to serve out the match, but he converted his first match point in the tie-break to secure a straight-set victory.
“The consistency isn’t there,” Murray admitted.
“The decision making is not great in the important moments still.
“They are moments that I was always very strong in and I haven’t been this year. So, disappointed with that.
“The positive for me to take from it is I obviously had opportunities again. I didn’t feel like I played a great match and still had chances so that’s positive.
“But I’m disappointed because I obviously want to be winning these matches. I haven’t in the past few months.”
