Pitstops are key to a Formula 1 race and can either make or break a team’s racing effort; considering that they can be a gamble at times.

The perfect race can meet its bitter end following a failed pitstop and this is exactly what happened with McLaren‘s Lando Norris.

When the 21-year-old entered the pits for changing his tyres, the stop took a lot longer than the average of around 2 seconds.

This caused the Brit to miss out on a potential podium at his home circuit at the British Grand Prix.

Odd reason for Lando’s stop

British former racing driver, Damon Hill was looking back at the race in Silverstone and paused on Norris’ pitstop.

He stated that the tools required to execute a stop were left out in the sun.

“Martin (Brundle) pointed out in the commentary, but they left out in the sun. You see they leave the tools out there and they were getting cooked,” he said.

“The track was itself 50 degrees, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.

“So those things would be really hot to touch.

“Yes, I think they will be looking at that in the future, they will be looking to keep their wheel gun somewhere protective from the sun because it seemed like a couple of teams had that problem,” he added.

How was Norris’ race?

Following his performance at the sprint qualifying on Saturday, Lando was secured at P5 at his home race.

He was all set for a podium finish, but the delayed pitstop turned the tables for him.

However, the 21-year-old was satisfied coming in fourth in Silverstone – his best result at his home GP.

Norris scored twelve points for his team and currently stands in third place in the drivers’ standings, behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

This is a massive feat considering this is only his third F1 season.
