Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has denied any interest in Max Verstappen.

With Mercedes only sorting one of their two driver seats for next season. That driver is Sir Lewis Hamilton, who has signed a two-year contract extension with the German team.

However, as mentioned before, the second seat remains vacant. Rumours of Valtteri Bottas staying, George Russell coming and even Lance Stroll being a shout continue to float around. Verstappen is one such rumour, although a faint one at that. However, it’s a tasty possibility, given he may well be the best driver in the future.

In an interview with GP Fans, Wolff was asked if the possibility of signing Verstappen interested him and Mercedes. Wolff denied interest in the move, and said Verstappen is happy where he is.

“I think that Verstappen and his entourage are very happy where they are,” Wolff said.

“Red Bull is their team and is their home, and why not keep it like that? I think we have our plans with our drivers, and Ferrari has a great line-up, and Lando Norris at McLaren looks pretty settled, so I think the trajectory is set.

“We’re not looking for a driver,” Wolff asserted.

Ticking clock

If Bottas or Russell is confirmed, it hasn’t been announced yet. Wolff understands the announcement had been delayed, and assured that a decision will be taken sooner than later. The upcoming Belgium Grand Prix may be the venue to announce it, although it could easily come later too.

“We want to take the decision in the summer (break),” Wolff said.

“There are a variety of opinions also within the team and the Daimler board, and we just need to stick our heads together and say, ‘Okay, what is everybody thinking?'” he concluded.
