Perez gives insight into mindset that makes him potential winner – “Important to maximise bad days”

Bahrain was not the perfect start in 2021 for Sergio Perez, but he still learned a lot from the race. Even though his car came to a standstill, the Mexican still came a respectable fifth position.

In a press release by Red Bull Racing, Perez talks about his experience at the Sakhir circuit.

“It was a really eventful weekend. I thought the race was over before we even started, but we were lucky to get the car running.

“It’s always important to maximise the ‘bad days’ and make the most of them and in the end it was a very positive recovery with some good points for the team.”

Perez also said that the fight for the top position will be a close one for Red Bull.

“I think it will be very close with Mercedes and we will see if the fight is circuit-related,” he said.

“It will be interesting to see how we stand inĀ Imola, on a very different circuit to Bahrain, and to see how we relate to them.”

When Perez was asked about what he learnt from the race at Bahrain, he revealed how he picked up pointers by observing Verstappen’s driving.

“I learned more about Max’s driving style and how to drive the car to get the most out of it.

“I think that was the biggest learning point: I now know what balance I need to find in the car throughout the weekend.”

The Mexican has his eyes set on the top position and hopes the race at Imola will push him through.

“Unlike Bahrain, qualifying in Imola is very important because you can hardly overtake there.”
