Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff feels Sebastian Vettel will succeed at Aston Martin in the upcoming season.
Four-time world champion Vettel recently spoke about how he had pondered retirement before rescuing his career through Lawrence Stroll’s new Aston Martin project.
It is worth noting that Wolff is a minor investor in this project.
“This project is just beginning and Sebastian is one of its key figures, so I hope everything goes well for him from the very start,” Wolff told RTL.
However, many believe that Vettel’s best years are now behind him and his form is unlikely to improve much.
“After five years it was clear to Ferrari that he was not their saviour and that Leclerc had more potential,” Fernando Alonso told Italian radio Rai.
Wolff believes it was more due to Ferrari’s lack of cohesion than Vettel himself. He tipped Aston Martin to provide Vettel with the perfect environment.
“Sebastian had to change his environment – that is the main thing that needed to be done,” he said.
“If, together with your team, you fall more and more into a tailspin, you should change something and that’s exactly what he did.
“So I don’t think last year’s problems are related to him, I just think the overall situation was getting worse and worse. I am confident he will be able to succeed at Aston Martin.”
