“It would be the greatest thing ever”: Rosberg wants Verstappen to beat Hamilton

Former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg is the last world champion since Lewis Hamilton. He believes the upcoming season could very well see a new name clinch the drivers’ title.

For that, the German believes it is imperative that Red Bull gets ahead of Mercedes in the first few races.

During a Sky Sports broadcast that included the likes of Johnny Herbert, David Croft and Simon Lazenby, Rosberg was questioned about Verstappen’s prospects in 2021.

“Hands up if you want to see the nose of the Red Bull in front of the Mercedes in the first race of the season.”

He immediately raised his own arm. A finger was raised by Johnny Herbert, while the others said that their contract meant they had to maintain a neutral stance.

“For the sport, it would be the greatest thing ever if Red Bull gets away and Mercedes have to chase them,” Rosberg said.

On whether Rosberg himself would be tempted to put any money on Verstappen winning the opening race of the season in Bahrain, Rosberg said, “Absolutely!”

Rosberg soon altered his statement, saying that he still expects to see Mercedes win the constructors’ championship.

“Otherwise I will be in trouble,” he said with a laugh.
