“It goes without saying”: Marko cites only way Red Bull can keep hold of Mercedes-bound Verstappen

Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko believes there is only one way his team can ensure that Max Verstappen does not get snapped away by Mercedes.

Verstappen is one of the finest talents on the grid. The Dutchman has regularly displayed all the traits necessary to establish his credentials.

Mercedes has made no secret of its interest in Verstappen, and speculation continues to mount on his long-term future.

With Lewis Hamilton’s contract set to end at the end of the season, many have touted Verstappen to take the Mercedes seat in 2022.

Verstappen currently has 3 years left on his contract at Red Bull. However, he has an exit clause that can be triggered by Mercedes.

Marko said his team would not take legal action against Mercedes if the Silver Arrows played the game by the law.

“We don’t have to take legal action against Mercedes if they try to snatch Max away from us,” Marko told Racing News 365.

“It goes without saying. We have to give Max a car that he can win with and a chance to compete for the world title.

“If we manage to give Max a title-winning car, then nothing will stand in the way of a future collaboration between him and Red Bull.”

This year, Verstappen will be partnered by Sergio Perez. The Mexican will bring with him a wealth of experience in the sport, with his career having spanned a decade now.

With the RB16 also looking promising, Verstappen will be eager to see if this could the year he finally gives a proper title challenge.

Hamilton remains a title favourite, but Verstappen will be keen to do all he can to stop the British driver from notching a record-breaking eighth world championship.
