“You choose your battles”: Verstappen charts out title challenge against Hamilton ahead of Imola

Max Verstappen is currently engaged in a rut to win the 2021 F1 title against Lewis Hamilton.

Even though only one out of the 23 races have taken place as of now, fans feel that the competition will be inches apart.

However, Verstappen might be a bit on the back-foot considering Hamilton’s experiences.

The Dutchman entered the F1 world back in 2015 at just 17 years of age. In 2014, he had finished third at the European Formula 3 Championship where Esteban Ocon took home the title.

His spontaneous promotion to the peak of motorsports simply means that he never had the chance to become champion even once in the junior categories.

As a result, Verstappen does not really have any experience at the top level even though he has won many karting events. But all this does not bother him.

“It’s very different [being in a title fight]. Of course, in that scenario, you don’t need to win every single battle or race. But that’s a natural thing.” he said.

“It doesn’t mean that because I didn’t win a title, for example, that I don’t understand that.

“Because I won many titles in go-karting and it’s basically the same – you choose your battles. Also, I only had one attempt of winning a title in F3, and of course, yeah, it didn’t happen,” said Verstappen.

The F1 driver feels that apart from skills and talent, one also requires a bit of luck to make it big in this sport.

“You just need the luck – that you’re in the right team, at the right place and are dominant for a long time.

“That does not always happens. You have to accept that; ‘I hope that I will be in a position to fight for a championship or whatever, in the near future’.”
