Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has officially become a footballer.
Nurmagomedov, who retired from UFC and mixed martial arts in October of 2020, has now decided to try his hand (or leg) at football. He has now signed for third-tier Russian football club FC Legion Dynamo.
Nurmagomedov is a massive fan of football, as one can see scrolling through his social media accounts. He watches most games and is known to make predictions and the like. He loves the game, and has expressed his desire to play professionally. Now it seems, he can finally go for it.
After the tragic death of his father due to severe symptoms from COVID-19, Nurmagomedov announced his immediate retirement from the sport after submitting American fighter Justin Gaethje on October 24. He had made a promise to his mother that he would retire after the fight, and duly kept it. He left behind a superb legacy of 13 wins in eight years of fighting, and a spotless record of 29 victories, which consists of eight knockouts and eleven submissions.
Nurmagomedov spent the time from October till December enjoying his retirement. In January, he announced that he wished to play football in the future, and tweeted that he was training to become a footballer. He stated in the tweet that he was ready to join immediately, and that he was “ready to accept offers”.
Legion Dynamo took to their Instagram to announce the blockbuster (at least in mainstream appeal) signing they managed to snag. The photo they posted was of Nurmagomedov shaking the hand of a person associated with the club. As it stands, Legion Dynamo sit third in the third tier of the Russian Professional Football League, and will look to aim for the two higher standings,
We can’t wait to see Nurmagomedov kick a football and play the beautiful game. This is the crossover of a lifetime, and we hope Nurmagomedov can do well. The scenes if he has an Eric Cantona-like impact would be madness. Whisper it quietly, but we wouldn’t mind if he becomes the G.O.A.T in this sport too.
