Fernando Alonso has proved himself to be one of the most skilful drivers of his generation. He is one of the highest paid drivers on the grid.
Early life
Alonso was born on July 29, 1981, in Oviedo, Asturias, Northern Spain. He is the son of José Luis Alonso, a mine shaft explosives factory mechanic and amateur kart driver, and Ana Daz, a department store employee. His elder sister Lorena is a doctor.
From 1985 to 1995, he attended the Holy Guardian Angel Primary School in Oviedo as part of the Basic Education System. Alonso was at the Institute Leopoldo Alas Clarín of San Lazaro until his motor racing career forced him to leave during his Curso de Orientación Universitaria in 2000.
Formula One career
In 2001, he made his debut for Minardi. He began his career with Renault as a test driver in 2002, progressing to a race seat in 2003.
He joined McLaren after winning two consecutive championships. He did, however, return to Renault a year later. He joined Ferrari in 2010 and raced for them until 2014.
Finally, in 2015, he returned to McLaren and remained with them until his retirement in 2018.
However, his retirement did not last long. Alonso announced his with Renault for the 2021 season. He returned to Renault after two previous stints with the Enstone outfit.
He races alongside Esteban Ocon at Renault. He will be a member of the team until the end of 2022.
Earnings
In his final F1 season, his annual salary was $33 million.
In 2018, he ranked 39th on Forbes’ list of the Highest-Paid Athletes. He earns approximately $1 million in endorsements. Alonso also owns a fashion label known as Kimoa.
