LeBron James is a professional basketball player from the United States who currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
James is widely regarded as one of the best NBA players of all time, and he is frequently compared to Michael Jordan in debates over who is the greatest basketball player of all time.
Early life
James was born in Akron, Ohio, on December 30, 1984, to Gloria Marie James, who was 16 at the time of his birth. Life was often difficult for James’ family when he was growing up. Gloria, realising that her son would be better off in a more stable family environment, agreed to let him live with the family of Frank Walker, a local youth football coach who introduced James to basketball when he was a child.
In the fifth grade, James began playing organised basketball. Later, he was a member of the Northeast Ohio Shooting Stars of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). James and his friends Sian Cotton, Dru Joyce III, and Willie McGee led the team to local and national success.

James is the only player in NBA history to have won three NBA championships as the NBA Finals MVP while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers.
He has four NBA championships, four NBA MVP awards, four NBA Finals MVP awards, and two Olympic gold medals to his credit. During his 17-year career, James set the record for all-time playoff points, ranks third all-time in points, and ranks eighth in career assists.
He has been named an All-Star 17 times, including three times as All-Star MVP.

Professional Career
Rookie Season
James was chosen first overall in the 2003 NBA draught by his hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. He set an NBA record for most points scored by a prep-to-pro player in his debut performance when he scored 25 points against the Sacramento Kings in his first regular season game. At the end of the season, he became the first Cavalier to be named NBA Rookie of the Year.
Rise to success
In 2004–05, James was selected to his first NBA All-Star Game, where he contributed 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists in a winning effort for the Eastern Conference. James led the East to victory in the 2006 All-Star Game with 29 points and was named the NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player.
James was named All-Star Game MVP for the second time in February of the 2007–08 season after a 27-point, 8-rebound, and 9-assist performance.
James finished second in NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting and made his first NBA All-Defensive Team at the end of the 2008–09 season, recording 23 chase-down blocks and a career-high 93 total blocks.
Miami Heat
On July 8, he announced his decision to sign with the Heat during a live ESPN special titled The Decision. James faced the Cavaliers in Cleveland for the first time since leaving as a free agent on December 2. He scored 38 points and led Miami to victory despite being booed each time he touched the ball.
James averaged 29.7 points and 7.8 assists per game in February of the 2012–13 season, setting multiple shooting efficiency records. During the same month, the Heat began a 27-game winning streak, the third longest in NBA history. Based on these achievements, Sports Illustrated called James’ performance a “month for the ages.”
Miami finished the season with a franchise and league-best 66–16 record, and James was named MVP for the fourth time, falling one vote short of becoming the first player in NBA history to win the award unanimously.
In a game against the Charlotte Bobcats on March 3, 2013–14, James set a career high and franchise record with 61 points.
Return to the Cleveland Cavaliers
James opted out of his contract with the Heat on June 25, 2014, and became an unrestricted free agent on July 1. On July 11, he announced his intention to return to the Cavaliers in a first-person essay in Sports Illustrated.
During the 2015–16 season, James was chastised for his role in several off-court squabbles, including the firing of Cavaliers coach David Blatt in the middle of the season. Despite these distractions, Cleveland finished the season with 57 victories and the best record in the Eastern Conference. On 52 percent shooting, James’ final averages were 25.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game.
Los Angeles Lakers
On June 29, 2018, James opted out of his Cavaliers contract and became an unrestricted free agent. Klutch Sports, his management company, announced on July 1 that he would sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Lakers announced on March 7, 2019, that James would begin a minutes restriction, and on March 30, he was officially ruled out for the rest of the season. James’ final averages were 27.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game, and despite his inconsistent season, he was named to the All-NBA Third Team, the first time in 12 years that he did not make the All-NBA First Team.
In the 2019-2020 season Finals, James and his teammates were pitted against his former team, the Heat, and quickly took command of the series with a 2–0 lead.
The Lakers finally defeated the Heat in Game 6, earning James his fourth NBA title and fourth Finals MVP award. He became the second-oldest player in league history to win the award at 35 years and 287 days old, and the only player in NBA history to win the award with three different franchises.

Personal life
James and Savannah Brinson, his high school sweetheart, have three children: Bronny, Bryce Maximus, and Zhuri Nova. Brinson accepted James’ proposal on December 31, 2011, and the couple married on September 14, 2013, in San Diego, California.
